What is Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates is a type of exercise that uses a bed-like apparatus called a reformer machine, designed by Joseph Pilates. It uses a system of springs, pulleys, and straps to create resistance as you move. It’s designed to challenge your strength, ROM/flexibility and skill. It is a low-impact, full-body method of training.
At Explore the Movement Pilates, every class is led by a qualified instructor. There are no screens and no mirrors. Just guided, intentional movement in a calm studio environment.
Is Reformer Pilates Suitable for Beginners?
Yes. You do not need to be flexible, fit or experienced to start. The reformer is designed to be adjusted to your level, and every class includes optional progressions so you can work at a pace that suits you.
Most people feel a little nervous before their first class. That is completely normal. Our instructors guide you through every movement, explain the machine before you start, and check in throughout the session. You will not be left to figure it out on your own. Reformer Pilates is suitable for people who have never done Pilates before, are returning to exercise after time away, are managing chronic pain, are pregnant or postnatal, or simply want a smarter, more sustainable way to build energy, strength and confidence.
Your body is not a machine that breaks. Your body is an ecosystem. It’s strong, resilient and adaptable.
What are the Benefits of Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates is more than a workout. It is a method of building strength, mobility and confidence that you carry into everyday life.
Full-Body Strength
Every class works multiple muscle groups through controlled, resistance-based movement. You build strength over time using your bodyweight for some exercises & increased spring resistance from the machine for some exercises.
Better Posture & Alignment
Reformer exercises target all your muscles that support your skeleton. Over time, this translates to better posture and less daily discomfort.
Improved Flexibility & Mobility
The system of springs, pulleys and straps allows you to move your body through a full range of motion, which helps improve flexibility over time as you learn the skill.
Reduced Pain & Tension
Many of our members come to Pilates to manage back pain, joint stiffness or to build core strength. Consistent practice helps ease these symptoms over time and improved strength, balance & co-ordination are the result.
Mental Clarity
Reformer Pilates requires focus and concentration. Those 50 minutes in the studio is time away from everything else, which most people find as valuable as the physical work.
Confidence in Your Body
Realising what your body can do & what it’s capable of changes how you think about it. That shift is one of the most common things our members notice.
How Often Should I Do Reformer Pilates?
It depends.
What are your goals? What is your work/study schedule? What other physical activity are you doing? One class a week is a meaningful starting point if that is what fits your schedule.
Consistency matters more than intensity. A regular practice builds strength, ROM and skill progressively and helps your body adapt over time. This is why our membership options are designed around weekly frequency rather than bulk class purchases. If your schedule is erratic, you travel for work, or you are a shift worker, then the bulk pass option may be better for you.
If you are just starting out, we recommend beginning with 1 to 2 classes per week and building from there as your body adjusts.
Is Reformer Pilates Safe During Pregnancy?
Yes, when guided by a qualified instructor.
Our Head Instructor holds a Diploma of Clinical Pilates & our studio follows the ACSM & ACOG Guidelines for pregnancy. Current physical activity guidelines support continued exercise during a healthy pregnancy, and reformer Pilates is one of the safest and most adaptable options available.
Your pregnancy is not a limitation unless you have a specific underlying medical condition that has a contraindication to exercise. It is simply another context your movement can adapt to.
If you have specific medical concerns, we recommend speaking with your healthcare provider before starting.
What is the Difference Between Reformer and Mat Pilates?
Reformer Pilates uses a Pilates reformer machine comprising springs, pulleys and straps that provide adjustable resistance, which means you can increase or decrease the challenge depending on your goals or current ability. The reformer also supports your body through movements, which makes it a good option for people managing chronic pain, joint issues or reduced mobility. The spring settings either provide challenge or support, depending on what your body needs in that session.
Mat Pilates uses your body weight as resistance and is performed on the floor. Mat Pilates is very accessible for those who don't have a reformer and who still want to do Pilates! You can do Mat Pilates anywhere.
At Explore the Movement Pilates, we specialise in reformer classes. We are also introducing Reformer and Mat Fusion classes soon, which combine both methods in a single session.
What Makes a Good Reformer Pilates Studio?
Not all Reformer Pilates experiences are the same. Here is what to look for when choosing a Reformer Pilates studio in Townsville.
Qualified, Present Instructors
Every class should be led by a real instructor who cues, corrects and adapts in real time. At ETMP, there are no screens and no pre-recorded routines. Our Head Instructor holds a Diploma of Clinical Pilates and is with you for every movement.
Small Class Sizes
The smaller the class, the more attention you receive. Our studio runs a maximum of 12 reformers per class, which means enough space to move well and enough support to be guided properly.
Evidence-Based Programming
Look for a studio that programs based on current evidence-based practices, not trends. Our classes are grounded in what the research supports, not what looks good on social media.
A Considered Environment
The space matters. Warm lighting, curated playlists, and a calm atmosphere are not extras. They are part of what makes the experience feel intentional rather than rushed.

Frequently Asked Questions
If you don't find what you're looking for in our FAQ's please reach out to us directly!
I’m completely new to Reformer Pilates. Can I still attend?
Absolutely! Our Reformer classes are intentionally designed for all levels, from complete beginners through to experienced movers. We don’t separate our classes into beginner, intermediate or advanced — through clever programming, variations and modifications, everybody moves together while working at a level that’s right for them.
How do I book a class?
The easiest way to book and manage your classes is through the Explore the Movement Pilates app. Please visit the App Store or Google Play, download our app & sign up. From there, you can view our timetable, book and cancel classes, manage your passes or membership and keep track of your visits and milestones.
Do I need to complete an orientation before my first class?
No. An orientation is not required before attending your first class. Our instructors will introduce you to the Reformer, help you get set up and guide you throughout the session. If you’d prefer some extra familiarisation before getting started, please get in touch with us, as we do run Reformer Foundations sessions once or twice per month.
What should I wear to Reformer Pilates?
Wear comfortable, breathable clothing that allows you to move freely. Fitted or semi-fitted activewear is ideal, as clothing that is too loose can get in the way of the Reformer and springs. Also, it's best to avoid zips and strings.
What should I bring to class?
Bring a water bottle, towel and grip socks. Everything else you need for your class is provided in the studio. Grip socks are also available to purchase in the studio if you don't have any.
Do I have to wear grip socks?
Yes. Grip socks are mandatory in all Reformer classes for hygiene and safety. If you don’t have a pair, we have grip socks available to purchase at the studio.
How long are your classes?
Our regular Reformer classes are 50 minutes, giving you plenty of time for a full-body workout while still fitting easily into your day.
Are your classes beginner, intermediate or advanced?
None of the above — and that’s intentional! Our group Reformer classes are all-levels. Your instructor will provide different options, spring choices and progressive layers throughout the class so you can work at the level that suits your body and experience.
We like to say: everybody rides together — just in their own way.
Can I attend Reformer Pilates while pregnant?
Yes. We welcome prenatal clients throughout a healthy pregnancy because the exercise guidelines are the same as for otherwise healthy individuals. Movement is an important part of your pregnancy journey. Let your instructor know that you’re pregnant so we can support you and provide appropriate options as your pregnancy progresses. If you have any medical concerns or complications, please speak with your healthcare provider before exercising.
Can I return to Pilates after having a baby?
Absolutely but please obtain medical clearance. Returning to exercise after pregnancy is different for everyone. We will guide and help you gradually rebuild strength and confidence. We recommend following the advice of your healthcare provider regarding when it is appropriate for you to return to exercise.
What if I have an injury, pain or limited mobility?
Please let your instructor know before class. Pain and injury are not necessarily the same thing. Wherever appropriate, we can provide suggestions to help you continue participating safely and comfortably. If you have a new or significant injury or medical condition, we may recommend obtaining advice or clearance from your healthcare professional before participating.
For most chronic musculoskeletal conditions that you have endured for longer than 3 months, it's generally safe to continue with exercise.
Will Reformer Pilates be challenging if I’m already fit?
Definitely! And especially if you have never done it before. Heavier springs don’t always mean a harder workout. Depending on the exercise, lighter resistance can actually demand greater control, stability and strength. Our instructors can offer progressions, variations, changes in tempo and appropriate spring options to help experienced clients find plenty of challenge.
What is the minimum age to attend?
The minimum age to participate in our classes is 14 years old. Please contact us before booking a younger participant, as there is a specific process to follow.
What is your cancellation policy?
We have a 12-hour cancellation policy. If you can no longer attend, please cancel your booking through the app as early as possible so another client has the opportunity to take your place. If you cancel with more than 12 hours' notice, you are not penalised, and you can reschedule. If you book with less than 12 hours' notice, you will lose your credit.
Do you offer casual classes, packs and memberships?
Yes. We offer a range of options depending on how often you’d like to attend, including casual visits, class packs and weekly memberships. If you’re new to the studio, our Intro Offer is a great way to experience Explore the Movement before deciding which option works best for you.
Do you reward attendance milestones?
We certainly do! We love celebrating consistency and commitment. Your visits are automatically tracked through our app, and when you reach some of our major milestones, we’ll celebrate with you:
50 classes — Custom Explore the Movement Reformer Mat
100 classes — Custom YETI Water Bottle

It’s our little way of recognising the work you’ve put in and celebrating your journey with us.
