Reformer Pilates Townsville

Build Energy, Strength & Confidence

What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a type of exercise that uses a bed-like apparatus called a reformer machine, designed by Joseph Pilates. It uses a system of springs, pulleys, and straps to create resistance as you move. It’s designed to challenge your strength, ROM/flexibility and skill. It is a low-impact, full-body method of training.
At Explore the Movement Pilates, every class is led by a qualified instructor. There are no screens and no mirrors. Just guided, intentional movement in a calm studio environment.

Reformer Pilates Townsville

Is Reformer Pilates Suitable for Beginners?

Yes. You do not need to be flexible, fit or experienced to start. The reformer is designed to be adjusted to your level, and every class includes optional progressions so you can work at a pace that suits you.
Most people feel a little nervous before their first class. That is completely normal. Our instructors guide you through every movement, explain the machine before you start, and check in throughout the session. You will not be left to figure it out on your own. Reformer Pilates is suitable for people who have never done Pilates before, are returning to exercise after time away, are managing chronic pain, are pregnant or postnatal, or simply want a smarter, more sustainable way to build energy, strength and confidence.

Your body is not a machine that breaks. Your body is an ecosystem. It’s strong, resilient and adaptable.

What are the Benefits of Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is more than a workout. It is a method of building strength, mobility and confidence that you carry into everyday life.

Full-Body Strength

Every class works multiple muscle groups through controlled, resistance-based movement. You build strength over time using your bodyweight for some exercises & increased spring resistance from the machine for some exercises.

Better Posture & Alignment

Reformer exercises target all your muscles that support your skeleton. Over time, this translates to better posture and less daily discomfort.

Improved Flexibility & Mobility

The system of springs, pulleys and straps allows you to move your body through a full range of motion, which helps improve flexibility over time as you learn the skill.

Reduced Pain & Tension

Many of our members come to Pilates to manage back pain, joint stiffness or to build core strength. Consistent practice helps ease these symptoms over time and improved strength, balance & co-ordination are the result.

Mental Clarity

Reformer Pilates requires focus and concentration. Those 50 minutes in the studio is time away from everything else, which most people find as valuable as the physical work.

Confidence in Your Body

Realising what your body can do & what it’s capable of changes how you think about it. That shift is one of the most common things our members notice.

How Often Should I Do Reformer Pilates?

It depends.

What are your goals? What is your work/study schedule? What other physical activity are you doing? One class a week is a meaningful starting point if that is what fits your schedule.
Consistency matters more than intensity. A regular practice builds strength, ROM and skill progressively and helps your body adapt over time. This is why our membership options are designed around weekly frequency rather than bulk class purchases. If your schedule is erratic, you travel for work, or you are a shift worker, then the bulk pass option may be better for you.

If you are just starting out, we recommend beginning with 1 to 2 classes per week and building from there as your body adjusts.

Is Reformer Pilates Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes, when guided by a qualified instructor.
Our Head Instructor holds a Diploma of Clinical Pilates & our studio follows the ACSM & ACOG Guidelines for pregnancy. Current physical activity guidelines support continued exercise during a healthy pregnancy, and reformer Pilates is one of the safest and most adaptable options available.

Your pregnancy is not a limitation unless you have a specific underlying medical condition that has a contraindication to exercise. It is simply another context your movement can adapt to.

If you have specific medical concerns, we recommend speaking with your healthcare provider before starting.

What is the Difference Between Reformer and Mat Pilates?

Reformer Pilates uses a Pilates reformer machine comprising springs, pulleys and straps that provide adjustable resistance, which means you can increase or decrease the challenge depending on your goals or current ability. The reformer also supports your body through movements, which makes it a good option for people managing chronic pain, joint issues or reduced mobility. The spring settings either provide challenge or support, depending on what your body needs in that session.

Mat Pilates uses your body weight as resistance and is performed on the floor. Mat Pilates is very accessible for those who don't have a reformer and who still want to do Pilates! You can do Mat Pilates anywhere.

At Explore the Movement Pilates, we specialise in reformer classes. We are also introducing Reformer and Mat Fusion classes soon, which combine both methods in a single session.

What Makes a Good Reformer Pilates Studio?

Not all Reformer Pilates experiences are the same. Here is what to look for when choosing a Reformer Pilates studio in Townsville.

Qualified, Present Instructors

Every class should be led by a real instructor who cues, corrects and adapts in real time. At ETMP, there are no screens and no pre-recorded routines. Our Head Instructor holds a Diploma of Clinical Pilates and is with you for every movement.

Small Class Sizes

The smaller the class, the more attention you receive. Our studio runs a maximum of 12 reformers per class, which means enough space to move well and enough support to be guided properly.

Evidence-Based Programming

Look for a studio that programs based on current evidence-based practices, not trends. Our classes are grounded in what the research supports, not what looks good on social media.

A Considered Environment

The space matters. Warm lighting, curated playlists, and a calm atmosphere are not extras. They are part of what makes the experience feel intentional rather than rushed.

What should I wear to Reformer Pilates?

Comfortable, fitted clothing that allows you to move freely. Avoid anything too loose as it can get caught in the springs or carriage. Leggings and a fitted top work well.

Do I need grip socks?

Grip socks are required for hygiene and safety. If you do not have a pair, you can purchase them at the studio.

How do I book a class?

All bookings are made through the Explore the Movement Pilates app, available on the App Store and Google Play. Download the app, create an account and choose a class time that suits you. You need valid credits to attend sessions. See our timetable here.

What should I expect during a Pilates reformer class?

Arrive about 10 minutes early. Your instructor will walk you through the reformer settings, answer any questions and make sure you feel comfortable before class starts. Every exercise is guided and you can workout at your own pace. Get ready for a fun mix of Contrology-inspired exercises on the reformer machine, all carefully crafted to give you a full-body workout! Read more about our classes here.

How long until I see results from Reformer Pilates?

Everybody is different. Most people notice results after their first few sessions, whether that is improved mobility, less tension or a better sense of body awareness. Consistency is key & results will come with dedicated practice.

Is Reformer Pilates good for chronic low back pain?

Many of our members come to reformer Pilates specifically to manage chronic low back pain. Pilates is a proven exercise type that supports and improves chronic pain outcomes. Pilates involves moving the body and spine in all directions. Consistency and graded exercise help restore strength, range of motion and control/skill. It’s an excellent exercise option for chronic low back pain.

Is Reformer Pilates hard?

The reformer can look intimidating, but every class is designed to be accessible. The springs provide adjustable resistance, and you control how hard you work.

Do you offer private sessions?

Yes. Private (1:1) and Semi-private (2:1) group sessions are available for those who want a more personalised experience. These sessions can also be purchased through the app.
